A Journey with Thoroughbreds: From Childhood Memories to Advocacy
The photo above is a photo of me when I was a young girl with my Thoroughbred (TB), Faithful Steps, affectionately known as “Squirt” in the barn. She was a remarkable little black mare, full of sass and possessing a heart of gold. Squirt and I embarked on an unforgettable journey together, transitioning from Maiden equitation at 2’ to the start of 3’6”. During the time I was showing her, the horse show rings were dominated by Thoroughbreds, and she was my loyal partner in learning the art of equestrianism.
Squirt taught me invaluable lessons that shaped me as a rider and a person. Her spirited nature required a sensitive rider, someone with soft hands and a gentle seat. She instilled in me the importance of patience and the beauty of asking for something with kindness, rather than demanding it through less desirable means. Our bond was built on trust and mutual respect, and she helped me understand the true essence of horsemanship.
As the show world gradually shifted towards Warmbloods, I found myself taking a semi-hiatus from Thoroughbreds. However, my heart never completely left them. Most of the horses and ponies I owned during that time still carried TB bloodlines, a testament to my enduring affection for the breed. I suppose I am a bit of a romantic, always drawn to the elegance and spirit of Thoroughbreds.
A few years ago, a visit to the racetrack reignited my passion for TBs. My involvement with Second Chance Thoroughbreds, Inc., where I sat on the board, further fueled this fire. This experience opened my eyes to the critical importance of aftercare and the opportunities to give these magnificent horses a second chance in life. I became a fervent advocate for Thoroughbred aftercare, determined to ensure that these horses receive the love and care they deserve after their racing careers.
Years ago, I experienced a turning point in my own life when I was laid off from a job. This unexpected event pushed me into a new day time career, one that forced me into growth and success. I want the same for Off-The-Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs). I believe that these horses deserve a do-over, a chance to shine in new roles and disciplines, and to find new homes where they are cherished and valued.
In hosting the BEYOND the Backstretch events, my goal is to showcase the incredible value of Thoroughbreds and highlight the privilege of owning and riding them. These events aim to change perceptions and demonstrate the versatility and potential of TBs in various equestrian disciplines. It is my hope that through these efforts, more people will recognize the beauty and talent of Thoroughbreds and be inspired to give them the opportunities they so richly deserve.
My journey with Thoroughbreds has been one of love, learning, and advocacy. From my early days with Squirt to my current role in promoting aftercare, I remain devoted to these extraordinary horses. They have given me so much, and it is my mission to give back to them by ensuring that they have the chance to lead fulfilling lives beyond the racetrack. The story of Thoroughbreds is one of resilience and grace, and I am proud to be a part of it.
In conclusion, my connection with Thoroughbreds has been a defining aspect of my life. The lessons I learned from Squirt have stayed with me, guiding me in my journey as a rider and an advocate. As I continue to work towards raising awareness and support for TB aftercare, I am filled with hope and determination. Together, we can make a difference for these amazing horses and help them find their place in the world, just as they have helped me find mine.
